NAF Deploys Surveillance Aircraft to Aid Rescue of Kidnapped Teachers, Students in Oyo

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to secure the release of teachers and pupils abducted in Oyo State by deploying a surveillance aircraft to support ongoing search-and-rescue operations.

The development was disclosed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde during a meeting with representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff and senior Air Force officials.

According to the governor, the Air Force responded immediately after the abduction was reported, dispatching an aerial surveillance platform to monitor the affected areas and gather intelligence for security agencies involved in the operation.

Makinde explained that information generated through the surveillance missions has played a vital role in tracking movements linked to the incident and improving coordination among security forces working to rescue the victims.

He noted that intelligence obtained from the aircraft continues to guide rescue efforts and strengthen the overall response to the kidnapping.

The governor also appealed to residents of the affected communities and the wider public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts to secure the victims’ release continue.

He assured citizens that the state government is deploying every available resource to ensure the safe return of those abducted.

Makinde praised the Nigerian Air Force for its rapid intervention, noting that the surveillance aircraft was provided at a time when Oyo State’s newly acquired aerial security assets are still undergoing assembly at a Nigerian Air Force facility in Lagos.

According to him, the state procured the aircraft after consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to technical support, maintenance services, and pilot training.

He expressed confidence that once operational, the new aerial assets would significantly strengthen security operations across Oyo State and neighboring regions.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at rescuing the abducted teachers and students.

He stressed that the service would continue collaborating with other security agencies to address security challenges and ensure the victims are safely returned.

The Air Force also commended the Oyo State Government for its support of various NAF projects and infrastructure initiatives within the state.

The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed men reportedly attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area, kidnapping 39 students and seven teachers, bringing the total number of victims to 46.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of schools and educational institutions in parts of Nigeria affected by insecurity.
