USA Thrash Paraguay 4-1 To Launch World Cup Campaign In Style

The United States kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in impressive fashion, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in front of a packed crowd at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium.

Backed by over 70,000 fans, the co-hosts delivered a dominant performance, with a brace from Folarin Balogun and goals from an own goal and Giovanni Reyna helping the Americans secure all three points in their opening Group D match.

The United States got off to the perfect start in the seventh minute when a dangerous attack led to Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla turning the ball into his own net, sending the home crowd into celebration.

The hosts continued to dominate possession and create chances, with Balogun seeing an effort ruled out for offside before eventually getting on the scoresheet in the 31st minute. The striker doubled his tally just before halftime with a superb solo effort, giving the Americans a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.

The second half saw Paraguay improve slightly, and substitute Mauricio pulled one goal back after a well-worked move involving Julio Enciso.

However, any hopes of a comeback were ended late in the game when Reyna produced a stunning finish with the outside of his boot to make it 4-1 and seal an emphatic victory for the hosts.

One concern for the United States was the halftime withdrawal of captain Christian Pulisic, who was substituted as a precaution while managing a fitness issue.

The match also featured a star-studded atmosphere, with celebrities including Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Paris Hilton in attendance.

Earlier, fans were treated to an opening ceremony featuring performances from Katy Perry, Future, Tyla, Anitta and Lisa.

The victory places the United States in a strong position at the top of Group D and boosts hopes of progressing to the knockout stages as they continue their quest for a deep World Cup run on home soil.
