The Oyo State Police Command has refuted a viral video claiming that about 300 Lakurawa terrorists had entered the state, describing the report as false, misleading, and intended to create panic among residents.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command said a detailed forensic examination and intelligence investigation found no evidence supporting the claim.
According to the police, analysis of the video revealed that the voice recording attached to it matched a previously debunked false security alert. Security operatives deployed across border communities also reported no unusual movement or activities linked to the alleged terrorist infiltration.
The Command further stated that a joint verification exercise conducted with neighbouring police formations confirmed that the information was entirely unfounded. Investigators also discovered that the video was neither recently recorded nor filmed in Nigeria, reinforcing concerns that it was deliberately circulated to mislead the public.
The police warned individuals against spreading unverified information capable of threatening public peace and security, stressing that anyone found guilty of intentionally disseminating false information would face legal consequences.
The reassurance comes amid heightened security concerns following recent attacks on schools and kidnapping incidents in parts of the country, which have fueled fears about the possible expansion of terrorist activities into southwestern states.
The Oyo State Police Command urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and rely only on verified official sources for security-related information, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across the state.
