ECOWAS Parliament Urges Renewable Energy Push to Drive Rural Development in West Africa

The ECOWAS Parliament has called for increased investment in renewable energy as a key strategy to expand electricity access and stimulate economic growth in rural communities across West Africa.

The appeal was made at a five-day delocalised joint committee meeting in Dakar, Senegal, where lawmakers, government officials, energy experts, development partners, and private sector stakeholders gathered to explore solutions to the region’s persistent electricity deficit.

The meeting is focused on policy reforms, financing strategies, and legislative frameworks aimed at accelerating the adoption of clean and sustainable energy systems, particularly in underserved rural areas.

Speaking on behalf of the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Fourth Deputy Speaker Billay Tunkara said renewable energy should be seen not only as a source of electricity but also as a tool for transforming rural economies and creating opportunities for women, youth, and farmers. He stressed that improved access to clean energy is essential for economic empowerment and long-term regional stability.

Representing the host country, Senegalese lawmaker Guy Marius Sagna highlighted the urgent need to bridge the gap between West Africa’s vast renewable energy potential and its low rural electrification rate.

He noted that although the region has abundant solar resources, electricity access in rural areas remains extremely limited, calling it a major development challenge.

Committee Chair Fanta Conte also warned that inadequate power supply continues to affect healthcare, education, agriculture, and job creation in rural communities.

She urged member states to ensure that regional energy policies are properly implemented at the national level to achieve real impact on the ground.

The meeting is expected to conclude with recommendations aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and accelerating rural electrification across ECOWAS member states.
