A massive warehouse fire that erupted in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles on June 17 continues to burn, prompting emergency declarations from state and local authorities.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said firefighters are making “significant progress” in containing the blaze, but the fire remains active several days after it first broke out.
The warehouse fire has generated large amounts of smoke, leading to deteriorating air quality across parts of Southern California. The South Coast Air Quality Management District warned that smoke from the incident is affecting communities throughout the region and advised residents to take precautions, particularly those with respiratory conditions.
In response to the ongoing emergency, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass have both declared states of emergency to support firefighting efforts and mobilize additional resources.
Fire crews continue to battle hotspots and work to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures. Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the fire, and an investigation is expected once conditions are safe.Residents in affected areas have been urged to monitor air quality updates and follow guidance from local health and emergency officials as containment operations continue.
