2026 Ballon d’Or power rankings: Mbappe, Messi & Dembele get World Cup boost

The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is heating up as the World Cup continues to influence the standings. With the 2025–26 club season complete, performances on football’s biggest international stage are now playing a decisive role in determining who could claim the prestigious individual award.

According to the latest rankings, Harry Kane remains the frontrunner after an outstanding campaign. The England captain scored 61 goals in all competitions, helped Bayern Munich secure a domestic double, claimed another European Golden Shoe, and finished the season with a hat-trick in the DFB-Pokal final. His strong World Cup form has further strengthened his case.

Second place belongs to Ousmane Dembélé, who has climbed rapidly after recovering from an injury-hit spell. The reigning Ballon d’Or holder has impressed for both club and country, including a hat-trick for France during the World Cup.

Michael Olise occupies third place following an exceptional season that produced 22 goals and 31 assists. His creative displays have continued into the World Cup, where he has become a key figure in France’s attack.

In fourth is Vitinha, whose commanding midfield performances helped Paris Saint-Germain enjoy another successful European campaign. While his World Cup displays have been quieter, he remains one of the world’s most influential midfielders.

Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi sits fifth. Despite playing outside Europe’s top leagues, his impressive World Cup performances have reignited discussion about another remarkable individual award.

Kylian Mbappé is sixth after an inconsistent season with Real Madrid. However, a series of goals at the World Cup has kept him firmly in contention.

The remainder of the top 10 includes Erling Haaland in seventh, Lamine Yamal in eighth, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in ninth, and Declan Rice completing the top 10.

With the World Cup still underway, standout performances in the knockout stages are expected to have a major impact before the Ballon d’Or winner is announced later this year.
