Thai Airline Employee Arrested in Australia Over Alleged Heroin Smuggling

Australian authorities have arrested and charged a 26-year-old Thai airline employee for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than one kilogram of heroin into the country through Melbourne Airport.

According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the woman was on duty aboard an international flight when she arrived in Melbourne on Thursday. She was detained after airport security officers became suspicious during routine baggage screening.

A subsequent X-ray examination of her luggage allegedly uncovered white powder concealed within the linings of 12 tote bags. Initial tests reportedly confirmed the substance to be heroin.

Police estimated the seized drugs have a street value of approximately 500,000 Australian dollars (about €302,500).

The suspect has been charged with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of heroin, offences that carry a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison under Australian law. She is expected to appear before a Melbourne court in September.

AFP Acting Commander Simone Butcher said the agency remains committed to identifying individuals who use their professional positions to facilitate drug trafficking.

Australian authorities have not disclosed the woman’s identity or the name of the airline involved. However, Thai Airways confirmed that one of its employees was detained in Melbourne and said it is cooperating fully with Australian authorities.

The airline stated that it has a zero-tolerance policy toward narcotics, stressing that employees are strictly prohibited from possessing, transporting or being involved in illegal drugs or prohibited substances. It added that it is also working with relevant authorities to ensure the employee has access to her basic legal rights while the case proceeds.
