Europe Dominates Global Passport Rankings as Sweden Tops 2026 Index

Europe has cemented its position as home to the world’s most powerful passports, claiming nine of the top 10 spots in the 2026 Global Passport Index (GPI), with Sweden emerging as the strongest passport globally.

The latest rankings, compiled by Global Citizen Solutions (GCS), assess passports using a broader set of criteria than traditional travel indexes. In addition to visa-free mobility, the GPI evaluates investment attractiveness and quality of life, considering factors such as healthcare, safety, taxation, innovation, climate, economic competitiveness and social infrastructure.

Sweden secured the top position after performing strongly across all categories, ranking 11th for global mobility, ninth for investment opportunities and second for quality of life.

Switzerland followed in second place, while Finland claimed third, supported by its world-leading quality of life ranking. Germany finished fourth, with the Netherlands and Denmark sharing fifth place.

Ireland, the United Kingdom, Norway and Singapore completed the top 10, with Singapore standing as the only non-European country to make the list.

According to Global Citizen Solutions CEO Patricia Casaburi, Europe’s dominance is driven by its ability to combine extensive global travel access with exceptional living standards.

She noted that while countries such as Singapore excel in visa-free travel and some Gulf and Asian nations perform strongly in investment, European countries consistently offer the best overall balance between mobility, economic opportunities and quality of life.

The report also highlighted the impact of Brexit on the United Kingdom’s passport. Although the UK remains eighth overall due to its strong quality-of-life score, its mobility ranking has slipped compared to Europe’s leading passports, reflecting the loss of automatic rights for British citizens to live and work across European Union member states.

Meanwhile, the United States recorded one of the steepest declines among G7 nations over the past five years. After topping the index in 2021, it dropped to 14th in 2025 before recovering slightly to 12th in 2026, partly due to countries such as Brazil reintroducing visa requirements for American travellers.
