Europe’s Most Active Volcano Erupts Again, Disrupting Flights in Southern Italy

Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna, has erupted again in Sicily, sending volcanic ash into the sky and causing disruptions to air travel in southern Italy.

The latest eruption occurred on July 5 from Etna’s Voragine summit crater, with plumes of ash drifting across parts of the island.

Italian authorities raised the aviation alert level following the eruption and introduced flight restrictions at Catania Airport, one of Sicily’s busiest airports, as volcanic ash reduced visibility in the surrounding area.

Monitoring teams continue to closely observe the volcano’s activity, tracking ash emissions and assessing the potential impact on nearby communities and air traffic.

Mount Etna, located on the east coast of Sicily, is among the world’s most active volcanoes and experiences frequent eruptions. While most eruptions are relatively moderate, volcanic ash can pose significant risks to aviation, damage crops, disrupt transportation and affect air quality.

Despite its frequent activity, thousands of people live on the fertile slopes surrounding the volcano, where volcanic soil supports agriculture, vineyards and orchards. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will adjust safety measures if the eruption intensifies.

Travellers using Catania Airport have been advised to check with their airlines for the latest flight information as volcanic activity continues.
