Starlux Airlines Unveils Special Aircraft Designed by Japanese Illustrator Hajime Sorayama

TAOYUAN, Taiwan — Taiwan’s Starlux Airlines has unveiled a specially designed Airbus A350-1000 featuring artwork by renowned Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama, whose work is widely recognized for its futuristic aesthetic and his involvement in the design of Sony’s robotic pet dog, Aibo.

The aircraft, distinguished by its striking metallic silver livery, was presented during a ceremony on Thursday at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

In a recorded video message played during the event, Sorayama described the project as the largest artwork he has ever created and said he was honoured to collaborate with the airline.

“Honestly, it felt more like a hobby than work for me. I really enjoyed it, and I hope all of you enjoy it too,” he said.

Starlux Airlines Chairman Chang Kuo-wei praised Sorayama’s creative vision, saying the artist is known for producing work unlike anything else in the industry.

“His philosophy aligns closely with mine, because we also take pride in doing what others don’t dare attempt, haven’t attempted, and simply can’t do,” Chang said during the unveiling ceremony.

The aircraft is scheduled to operate its first passenger flight to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport on Sunday before officially entering regular commercial service on October 1.

The special livery is expected to serve as a flying showcase of Sorayama’s signature futuristic style while highlighting Starlux Airlines’ focus on premium branding and distinctive passenger experiences.
