Nigeria Joins India in Battle to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria has thrown its hat into the ring to host the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, going head-to-head with India in what promises to be a fierce contest.

Commonwealth Sport confirmed on Monday that both nations filed their proposals before the 31 August deadline. The announcement comes as a lifeline for the Games, which had faced doubts about their future after recent host withdrawals.

Canada – which staged the inaugural Games in Hamilton back in 1930 – was widely tipped to bid but ultimately pulled out, citing financial constraints.

“This positive response from two sporting powerhouse nations demonstrates the enduring appeal of the Commonwealth Games and the strength of our reimagined, sustainable model,” said Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare.

India’s pitch forms part of its broader ambition to stage the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad, while Nigeria has set its sights on showcasing African sporting might on the global stage.

Both bids will now be scrutinised by an Evaluation Commission, chaired by Commonwealth Sport vice president Sandra Osborne, with in-person presentations scheduled for London later this month. A final decision will be made at the organisation’s General Assembly in Glasgow this November.

The race to 2030 is being closely watched after a turbulent run of host changes: Durban pulled out of the 2022 Games, forcing Birmingham to step in, while Victoria withdrew from hosting in 2026, leaving Glasgow to organise a stripped-back edition next year.

With India and Nigeria in the running, Commonwealth Sport hopes the centenary Games will mark a turning point – breathing new life into a tournament once feared to be in terminal decline.
