Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is reportedly set to retire from international football after making 59 appearances for the Teranga Lions.
According to Senegalese outlet Taggat, the 34-year-old goalkeeper has informed incoming head coach Patrick Vieira of his intention to end his international career.
Mendy has been a key member of the Senegal national team since making his international debut in November 2018.
He played a prominent role in Senegal’s historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2021 and also represented the country at this summer’s World Cup.
His most recent appearance reportedly came in Senegal’s 3-2 defeat to Norway, a match in which Mendy was forced off with an injury and replaced by Mory Diaw.
Diaw subsequently featured in Senegal’s remaining matches at the tournament, including the last-16 clash against Belgium, which also ended in a 3-2 defeat.
Should Mendy confirm his retirement, Diaw could emerge as a leading candidate to become Senegal’s first-choice goalkeeper as Vieira begins his tenure as head coach.
Mendy’s potential departure would mark the end of a significant chapter in Senegal’s recent international history, following his contribution to the team’s continental title success.
