The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged the German government to invest in agriculture and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to unlock economic opportunities in Abuja.
Wike made the appeal on Tuesday when the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Stefan Rössel, paid him a visit in Abuja.
The minister acknowledged the longstanding economic, cultural and political relations between Nigeria and Germany, noting that the FCT offered investment opportunities across several sectors.
He assured foreign investors that his administration would provide a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, stressing his ambition to transform Abuja into a world-class capital city capable of competing with global cities such as Berlin, Munich and Washington, D.C.
Wike said Abuja had, before the current administration, drifted from its original status as a capital city, particularly in the areas of security and urban infrastructure.
However, he said the administration had made significant progress in addressing the challenges and repositioning the territory for development.
“However, under the mandate of the current administration, significant strides have been made to rewrite that narrative.
“Our vision is to see Abuja become one of the best cities in the world. With the mandate to change the narrative, security and the environment have improved, and road infrastructure is being actively delivered,” he said.
Earlier, Rössel praised the 66-year diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and Germany and expressed his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The ambassador also commended the visible developments in the FCT and acknowledged the broader economic reform agenda of the Nigerian government.
“As a new ambassador, it is immediately visible that this country is on the move.
“These courageous reforms taken by the government require time to translate into jobs and welfare, but Germany has always supported these efforts and will continue to do so,” he said.
