Reps Grant MREIF CEO One-Week Extension to Appear Over Housing Fund Investigation

The House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat has granted the management of the MOFI Real Estate Investment Fund (MREIF) a final one-week extension to appear before lawmakers as part of an ongoing investigation into the fund’s operations and management.

The committee had earlier invited MREIF Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, along with members of the fund’s management team, to appear before it on June 2, 2026, following concerns raised in petitions submitted against the initiative.

Chairman of the committee, Rep. Abdulmumin Jibrin, said the probe is intended to assess whether the fund is operating in line with its objectives and fulfilling the mandate set out for it by the Federal Government.

According to Jibrin, lawmakers are examining the administration, performance and overall impact of the housing initiative while also reviewing complaints brought before the committee. In a letter to the committee, Dr. Takang acknowledged the invitation and expressed the fund’s readiness to cooperate with the National Assembly’s oversight responsibilities. He, however, explained that he was out of Abuja on a previously scheduled official assignment and requested that the hearing be rescheduled.

The MREIF chief assured lawmakers that the organisation remains committed to engaging with the committee and providing all necessary information regarding its operations.Following consideration of the request, the committee agreed to shift the hearing by one week, fixing a new date of June 9, 2026.

Jibrin said the extension was granted to ensure that Dr. Takang personally attends the session, stressing that his appearance is essential to the committee’s inquiry and cannot be delegated to another official.

He reiterated the committee’s commitment to conducting a fair, transparent and comprehensive investigation into the management of the fund, which was established to improve access to affordable housing for Nigerians. The lawmaker added that all issues raised in the petitions before the committee would be thoroughly examined as part of efforts to promote accountability and ensure the effective implementation of the housing programme.

He further stated that the committee expects Dr. Takang and the MREIF management team to appear before lawmakers on the rescheduled date without fail.
