A Coventry man who raped a woman as she slept has been jailed for eight years.
Leslie Mangwa, 33, attacked his victim in January 2024 after she had returned home from a night out. She woke to find him sexually assaulting her, screamed at him to leave, and quickly reported the ordeal to police.
Mangwa denied the charge, insisting the act was consensual, but a jury found him guilty following a trial at Warwick Crown Court. He was sentenced on Friday to eight years behind bars.
In addition to the prison term, the judge imposed a restraining order and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Police praised the victim’s courage in coming forward. A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We know that reporting rape, sexual assault or crimes such as indecent exposure or upskirting can be daunting. We’re here to support survivors, whether they’re ready to report to police or want to talk to someone else.”
Officers urged anyone who has experienced sexual abuse to seek help.
“We would encourage anyone who has suffered sexual abuse to come forward and tell their story.
“We know that reporting rape, sexual assault or another sexual crime like indecent exposure or upskirting can be daunting.”
