Walmart is planting its flag in South Africa, announcing plans to open its first branded stores in the country and the continent before the end of 2025.
The retail giant said the move signals its long-term commitment to providing affordable, quality goods to South African shoppers, while boosting opportunities for local suppliers and entrepreneurs.
The decision follows Walmart’s inaugural Africa Growth Summit in April, which showcased suppliers from 12 countries and led to the recruitment of several small and medium-sized businesses across the continent.
Kath McLay, Walmart International President and CEO, said the South African stores will stock fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, technology and locally produced goods. “By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring Every Day Low Prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” she said.
The stores promise bright layouts, wide aisles and Walmart’s trademark customer service, alongside digital shopping tools to enhance convenience. Specific locations and opening dates will be revealed in October.
Miles Van Rensburg, Massmart’s president and CEO, said affordability will be at the heart of the offering. “Every rand matters when it comes to price. We’re committed to providing an exceptional in-store experience at every touchpoint, from a warm welcome at the door to a friendly checkout,” he said.
Walmart also pledged to invest in local communities, supporting food security, disaster relief and sustainability projects, while creating jobs and promoting economic growth.
“This is about more than retail,” Van Rensburg added. “It’s about building trust, investing in communities, and shaping a better future alongside South Africans.”
