The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a review of questionable entries in the preliminary register of voters ahead of the 2027 general election, following reports of suspected artificial intelligence-generated photographs in the document published on its website.
The commission said it had flagged some names for further examination after concerns emerged during the display of the register at the ward level, assuring Nigerians that verified irregularities would be corrected before the final register is certified.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, disclosed this in a statement reacting to reports circulating on social media about suspicious photographs in the preliminary register.
He said the commission had begun reviewing the affected records and would take appropriate corrective measures in line with established procedures.
Haruna explained that the online version of the register represented the original preliminary document and did not capture all the data-cleaning activities still underway.
He stressed that the preliminary register was not the final certified register, noting that the display, claims and objections exercise was designed to enable citizens and stakeholders to scrutinise the entries, identify inaccuracies and report suspected irregularities for correction.
“The display, claims and objections exercise is specifically intended to facilitate public scrutiny, identify inaccuracies and irregularities, and enable appropriate corrections before certification,” he said.
The electoral body is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs to determine whether technical or procedural lapses contributed to their appearance in the register.
According to Haruna, the commission would take appropriate action based on the findings of the review, adding that further updates would be provided as the process progresses.
He commended citizens and other stakeholders who drew attention to the suspected irregularities, describing their vigilance as an important contribution to improving the accuracy and integrity of the voter register.
INEC said it remained committed to completing the necessary verification, adjudication and data-cleaning processes before the scheduled certification of the final register of voters on December 15, 2026.
The review comes as the commission prepares for the 2027 general election, with the accuracy of the voter register remaining a critical component of preparations for the polls.
