A 25-year-old medical doctor serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Dr. Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, has reportedly died after his request for a three-week sick leave was allegedly delayed.
According to reports, Dr. Enakirerhi fell seriously ill during his service year and sought permission to return home for medical treatment and recovery. A fellow doctor alleged that his request for leave remained unapproved for weeks despite the worsening of his condition.
It was also claimed that the deceased’s father and brother, both medical doctors, appealed to the relevant authorities to allow him to receive specialised treatment. Although permission was eventually granted, reports say it came only a few days before his death.
The incident has sparked widespread grief and outrage on social media, with many Nigerians calling for an investigation and improved welfare for corps members and young medical professionals.
As of the time of reporting, the NYSC and the institution where Dr. Enakirerhi was serving had not issued an official statement confirming the circumstances surrounding his sick leave request or his death.
