Italy Condemns Israeli Minister Over Remarks Amid Gaza Flotilla Dispute

Italy’s Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, has strongly criticised Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over remarks directed at Italy following reports that Italian authorities are investigating allegations related to the treatment of Gaza-bound aid activists.

Speaking before the Italian Senate on Tuesday, Tajani described Ben-Gvir’s comments as unacceptable and inappropriate for a government official.

“These are unacceptable statements that Italy firmly rejects. Such remarks do not reflect the standards expected of a minister,” Tajani said.

The diplomatic dispute emerged after reports indicated that Italian authorities had launched an inquiry into the treatment of activists who were intercepted by Israeli forces while attempting to challenge the blockade on Gaza.

Last month, more than 430 activists from several countries were detained after Israeli authorities intercepted vessels carrying members of an international solidarity mission in waters near the eastern Mediterranean. The activists were attempting to deliver aid and draw attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The controversy intensified after footage circulated online allegedly showing detainees being treated harshly while in Israeli custody. The videos sparked criticism from human rights groups and several governments, leading to calls for investigations into possible violations of international law.

According to Italian media reports, authorities are examining allegations involving the detention and treatment of Italian citizens who were among those intercepted during the operation.

France has also reportedly opened an investigation into allegations connected to the incident.

The European Union is currently discussing possible measures against Ben-Gvir over his handling of the activists. While member states have yet to reach a unanimous position, Italy has indicated its support for further action if evidence of wrongdoing is established.

The latest dispute comes amid increasing tensions between Israel and several European nations over developments in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Despite recent disagreements, Italy remains one of Israel’s key partners in Europe. Alongside Germany, Italy has continued to oppose proposals within the European Union aimed at suspending major trade agreements with Israel.

The European Union remains Israel’s largest trading partner, accounting for a significant share of its international trade and economic cooperation.

The incident is expected to further test diplomatic relations between Israel and several European countries as international scrutiny over the Gaza conflict continues to grow.
