Power Harassment Confirmed in Death of Young South Korean Firefighter

The South Korean government has confirmed that a female firefighter in her 20s, who died by suicide while serving with the Gwangju Fire Safety Headquarters, was subjected to significant workplace harassment, validating most of the allegations raised after her death.

According to the Office for Government Policy Coordination, an official investigation found evidence of power harassment, including allegations that the firefighter was pressured to consume alcohol against her will and experienced other forms of workplace misconduct.

Following the findings, the government requested the National Fire Agency to take disciplinary action against 17 firefighters believed to have been involved in the misconduct. Authorities also referred two retired individuals to investigative agencies for further examination of their roles in the case.

The incident has sparked renewed concern about workplace culture within emergency services and the treatment of junior personnel by senior colleagues. Calls have intensified for stronger safeguards against workplace bullying, abuse of authority, and forced participation in social drinking practices that remain a concern in some professional environments.

The government said the disciplinary and investigative measures are intended to ensure accountability and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
