FIFA World Cup – Round of 16
Portugal 0-1 Spain
Substitute Mikel Merino scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Spain edged Portugal 1-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup, ending Cristiano Ronaldo’s final appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
With the match seemingly heading for extra time, Ferran Torres threaded a precise pass into Merino, who calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the 91st minute to seal victory for the European champions.
Spain will now face either the United States or Belgium in the quarter-finals on Friday, July 10.
The defeat also brought the curtain down on Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup career after the 41-year-old confirmed before the tournament that this would be his final appearance at the competition.
Spain made a bright start and nearly took the lead after three minutes when Dani Olmo’s through ball released Mikel Oyarzabal, but the striker dragged his effort wide.
Diogo Costa then kept Portugal level with two excellent saves to deny Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena.
Portugal’s best chance of the opening half came in the 41st minute when Nuno Mendes’ powerful strike, deflected off Pedro Porro, crashed against the crossbar.
The second half was a tightly contested affair with few clear-cut opportunities.
Bruno Fernandes fired into the side netting for Portugal in the 76th minute, while at the other end Ruben Dias produced a crucial block to deny Dani Olmo.
The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time after Rodri won a free-kick. Portugal’s defence was caught off guard as Ferran Torres quickly released Merino, who finished low into the bottom corner to send Spain through.
The result continues Spain’s impressive World Cup campaign while extending goalkeeper Unai Simón’s remarkable defensive record, with Spain yet to concede a goal in the tournament.
For Portugal, the defeat marks the end of an era as Ronaldo bows out of the World Cup after a distinguished international career. The veteran forward, who captained Portugal to the UEFA Euro 2016 title, managed just 19 touches during the match despite playing the full 90 minutes.
Spain advance to the last eight, while Portugal’s hopes of lifting a first FIFA World Cup trophy come to an end.
