Arsenal began their Premier League title defence in impressive fashion on Friday, defeating newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the opening match of the new season and quickly showed that they remain determined to retain the title.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring after 15 minutes before Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal’s advantage eight minutes later. Martin Odegaard then added a third shortly after half-time to complete a comfortable victory.
Arsenal started aggressively in front of a sellout crowd of around 60,000 supporters.
New signing Christos Tzolis was particularly impressive on his first Premier League start for the club. The Greek winger had already provided two assists in Arsenal’s Community Shield victory and continued to threaten Coventry’s defence throughout the match.
Tzolis came close to scoring in the opening minutes when his effort went just over the crossbar. He then saw another attempt cleared off the line by Coventry defender Bobby Thomas.
Arsenal eventually broke the deadlock in the 15th minute. Coventry defender Milan van Ewijk lost possession, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to collect the ball and deliver a cross into the penalty area. Havertz met it with a low finish to give the champions the lead.
Arsenal continued to press and were rewarded again in the 23rd minute.
Declan Rice and Odegaard combined before finding Tzolis, whose cross was pushed away by Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. Saka reacted quickly to fire the rebound into the net from close range.
Coventry struggled to cope with Arsenal’s pressing and movement, with the home side controlling much of the first half.
The champions added a third goal four minutes after the restart. Saka and Ben White combined to break through Coventry’s defence before Odegaard’s effort found its way past Rushworth.
The victory gives Arsenal the perfect start to their attempt to retain the Premier League title.
Arsenal have not successfully defended an English league title since the 1930s, making the challenge particularly significant for Arteta and his players.
The club have also strengthened their squad during the summer. England defender Ezri Konsa completed a £51m ($69m) transfer from Aston Villa on Friday and was introduced to Arsenal supporters before the match.
Konsa could make his Arsenal debut when the champions travel to face his former club on August 31.
For Coventry, the match marked their first Premier League appearance since 2001 after they won the Championship last season.
Their return to the top flight was a major achievement after years of difficulties, including a spell in the fourth tier, financial problems and periods of ground-sharing.
However, their return began with a difficult test against the defending champions.
Arsenal will now have 10 days before their next Premier League fixture, giving Arteta’s team time to prepare for the trip to Aston Villa.
Odegaard said Arsenal were pleased to secure victory in the opening match but acknowledged that there was still room for improvement.
The Arsenal captain said the team controlled the game well after a nervous opening and believed they could have created and scored more chances.
For now, though, the champions could hardly have asked for a better beginning to their title defence.
