Patrick Vieira has been appointed Senegal head coach, returning to the country of his birth to take charge of the Teranga Lions once more.
The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, describing it as a strategic decision designed to build a high-level technical set-up and match the country’s sporting ambitions. The 50-year-old replaces Pape Thiaw, who left his position after Senegal were eliminated by Belgium in the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Vieira arrives with a reputation built during an outstanding playing career and a coaching journey across Europe and the United States. Born in Dakar, he moved to France as a child and went on to represent Les Bleus, winning the 1998 World Cup on home soil and the European Championship two years later. He earned more than 100 international caps for France.
His club career included AC Milan, Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City. At Arsenal, where Arsene Wenger brought him in 1996, Vieira became one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders. He won three league titles and established himself as a leader during a golden period for the London club.
Vieira moved into management with New York City FC in 2016 before returning to Europe with Nice. He later managed Crystal Palace in the Premier League, followed by spells at Strasbourg and Genoa. His appointment as Senegal coach is his first senior international management role.
The new coach inherits a team facing considerable pressure. Senegal’s campaign at the 2026 World Cup ended with a dramatic 3- 2 defeat by Belgium, despite the Lions taking a two-goal lead. The result brought an abrupt end to Thiaw’s tenure and increased expectations surrounding Vieira’s arrival.
There is also unfinished business surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Senegal originally won the final against Morocco 1- 0 after extra time. Still, CAF later ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match after players and staff left the pitch during a protest over a disputed penalty. Morocco were subsequently awarded a 3- 0 victory and the title.
Senegal have appealed that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, with the case still hanging over the federation and national team. CAS confirmed in March that it had registered the appeal.
Vieira’s immediate challenge will be preparing Senegal for the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. The Lions have been drawn alongside Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia, with qualifying matches due to begin during the September international window.
His official presentation date has not yet been announced, but Vieira will have little time to settle in. The appointment combines a celebrated Senegalese connection as the former World Cup winner begins a new chapter by leading the nation where his journey began.
