China has warned that it will take necessary steps to protect its interests after the United States announced plans to expand economic sanctions against Iran and countries that continue doing business with Tehran.
China’s Foreign Ministry said it strongly opposed what it described as unilateral US sanctions, arguing that its trade and cooperation with Iran are conducted within international law.
The warning came after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a new round of sanctions targeting Iran’s oil trade and financial networks. He said the US would put pressure on banks, businesses and countries that continue to support Iran economically.
China is particularly important because it is Iran’s biggest buyer of oil, with analysts saying a large majority of Iran’s oil exports are sent to China.
Iran has also said it is prepared to withstand the new sanctions, with its economy minister claiming that the country has plans and measures in place to deal with the pressure.
The latest move comes amid continuing tensions between the US and Iran following months of conflict and failed diplomatic efforts. The sanctions could further affect global oil prices and international trade, particularly if tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue.
Analysts, however, question how effective the new sanctions will be, noting that China has previously resisted unilateral US sanctions and is unlikely to completely stop buying Iranian oil.
