Sudan has lifted a two-year-old night-time curfew and state of emergency in the capital, Khartoum, in a move authorities say will allow residents to move and conduct business around the clock.
The decision was announced by the Security Affairs Coordination Committee following a meeting chaired by Khartoum Governor Ahmed Othman Hamza.
Despite the easing of restrictions, authorities said security measures would remain in place across the capital.
Army patrols and checkpoints will continue operating, while residents travelling at night have been advised to carry valid identification documents.
Authorities have also introduced restrictions on the entry of foreign nationals into Khartoum State. Foreigners will not be permitted to enter by public or private transport, including trains and buses, unless they possess valid visas or official permits.
The night-time curfew was imposed in May 2024 as fighting intensified between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Sudan has been engulfed in war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between forces loyal to army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced around 13 million others, according to estimates from the United Nations and international organisations.
The lifting of the curfew comes as Sudan continues to grapple with the devastating humanitarian and security consequences of the prolonged conflict.
