The United Nations has called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan as escalating drone attacks and the destruction of healthcare facilities worsen the country’s already devastating humanitarian crisis.
More than six million people have been displaced within Sudan, while another 4.5 million have fled across the country’s borders since the conflict began.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned that civilians in several parts of the country faced an imminent risk of further attacks.
Türk called for an immediate end to foreign involvement in the conflict and urged the parties to return Sudan to civilian rule.
UN investigators said both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had increasingly deployed long-range drones, allowing attacks to reach areas far beyond the traditional front lines.
The escalation has resulted in devastating civilian casualties, particularly in South Kordofan.
According to UN investigators, drone strikes on a kindergarten and a hospital in the region killed 114 people, including 60 children.
In a separate attack, at least 70 people were killed when a teaching hospital was targeted.
The UN said the growing use of long-range weapons was exposing civilians and vital infrastructure to greater danger, while further restricting access to essential healthcare.
Investigators said there were reasonable grounds to believe that both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces had committed serious violations of international law that could amount to war crimes.
The UN has repeatedly urged the warring parties to protect civilians, respect international humanitarian law and facilitate humanitarian access as the conflict continues to drive displacement, death and destruction across Sudan.
The latest appeal for a ceasefire comes amid mounting concerns that the expansion of drone warfare could further intensify the conflict and expose more civilians to indiscriminate attacks.
