Renewed fighting in Yemen has forced thousands of civilians from their homes, sending families into makeshift camps and open spaces with little more than the belongings they were able to carry.
In Taiz province, displaced families have gathered in exposed areas and under trees as clashes between Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed government forces intensify.
The United Nations estimates that at least 125,000 people have been newly displaced over the past two weeks, while the World Health Organization (WHO) says more than 500 people were killed in the fighting during the past week.
For 51-year-old Nashwan Ahmed Said, the latest displacement marks the third time he has been forced to flee his home since Yemen’s war began in 2014.
“The reason we were displaced was the war and the attacks, shelling, and bombardment we were subjected to by the Houthis,” Said said.
“We were forced to flee to the Akad area, but the shelling and gunfire followed us there. Bullets and shells were like rain over us.”
Said and his family are now living in a makeshift shelter with limited access to basic necessities.
“We have no proper shelter, no toilets, no food, no drinking water, and none of the necessities,” he said. “This current displacement is the third time we have been forced to leave our home.”
Humanitarian operations are facing growing challenges as damaged roads, restricted access and inadequate funding make it increasingly difficult for aid agencies to reach displaced communities.
The worsening displacement has heightened concerns over the humanitarian situation, with aid organisations warning that continued fighting and limited resources could further deepen the crisis facing civilians across Yemen.
