Fuel Crisis Deepens in Niger as Niamey Motorists Battle Long Queues

Motorists in Niger’s capital, Niamey, are facing prolonged queues at petrol stations as fuel shortages spread across the country, disrupting transportation and daily activities.

Residents said the scarcity had made it increasingly difficult to commute to work and carry out essential tasks, with some reporting that they had spent days searching for petrol despite assurances that the shortage had been resolved.

A Niamey resident, Harouna Chérif, said the situation had persisted for about a week, leaving motorists struggling to obtain fuel for their daily journeys.

“For a week now we’ve been struggling; we can’t even find fuel to get to work. There’s always problems, and we don’t even understand what kind of problems they are,” Chérif said.

He urged the government to investigate the situation and find a lasting solution to the recurring difficulties in accessing fuel.

Another resident, Abdoulaye Zakari, said motorists had continued to experience shortages despite being told that supplies had returned to normal.

“We’ve been looking for fuel for quite some time now, but things are not going well. We’ve been told the shortage is over, yet we still don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Zakari said.

He appealed to the country’s leaders to address the hardship facing residents and ensure a reliable supply of petrol.

The shortages have heightened frustration among motorists, many of whom depend on regular fuel supplies for transportation and other daily activities.

The cause of the scarcity remains unclear, while there is no confirmed timeline for when supplies will fully return to normal, leaving motorists uncertain about when they will be able to refuel without lengthy waits.
