Defending champions Argentina produced a remarkable second-half comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 and book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The dramatic Round of 16 encounter, played in Atlanta on July 8, saw Lionel Messi recover from a difficult first half to inspire Argentina’s fightback with a goal and an assist.
Egypt took the lead in the 15th minute when Yasser Ibrahim headed home from a cross to stun the South American giants.
Argentina had a golden opportunity to equalise just four minutes later after Nicolás Tagliafico won a penalty, but Messi’s effort was saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Shawbir—his second penalty miss of the tournament.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances through Alexis Mac Allister, Julián Álvarez and Messi, Argentina went into the break trailing 1-0.
Egypt doubled their advantage in the 66th minute when Mostafa Ziko finished off a swift counterattack following excellent build-up play involving Mohamed Salah and Hossam Hassan.
Facing elimination, Argentina mounted a spirited response.
Cristian Romero reduced the deficit in the 79th minute, heading home from a pinpoint cross delivered by Messi.
Four minutes later, Messi levelled the match with a superb left-footed volley from inside the penalty area, bringing Argentina back to 2-2 and taking his tournament tally to eight goals.
With extra time looming, Argentina completed the comeback deep into stoppage time.
Enzo Fernández powered in a header from Lautaro Martínez’s cross in the 92nd minute to seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Messi, who endured a frustrating opening hour that included a missed penalty and several wasted opportunities, finished the match with one goal and one assist, playing a decisive role in Argentina’s comeback.
The victory sends the defending champions into the quarter-finals, where they will continue their bid to retain the FIFA World Cup title after overcoming a resilient Egyptian side that came within minutes of causing one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
