The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off in grand style on Thursday as global music stars and football fans gathered for a spectacular opening ceremony in Mexico City, marking the start of the world’s biggest football tournament.The ceremony featured performances from renowned artists, including Burna Boy and Shakira, who thrilled fans with a live rendition of their World Cup track, Dai Dai.
The event began with a performance of the official World Cup anthem, DNA, by celebrated tenor Andrea Bocelli and K-pop singer EJAE ahead of the tournament’s opening match between Mexico and South Africa.
Although the anthem also features contributions from David Guetta and Megan Thee Stallion, both artists were absent from the ceremony.
South African musician Tyler ICU also took centre stage, delivering a performance of South Africa’s national anthem as part of the festivities.
Beyond the action on the pitch, celebrations extended to Los Angeles, one of the tournament’s host cities, where fans enjoyed a variety of football-themed events, concerts and public viewing experiences.
Sportswear company adidas transformed BMO Stadium into a free fan zone through its “Home of Soccer” initiative in partnership with the Los Angeles World Cup Host Committee. The venue hosted interactive activities and entertainment designed to engage football supporters throughout the tournament.
A music festival was also scheduled following the South Korea versus Czechia match, featuring performances by Noodles and Grammy-winning Mexican artist Peso Pluma. The celebrations were expected to conclude with a drone show narrated by Christian Pulisic ahead of the United States’ opening match against Paraguay.
Meanwhile, Santa Monica hosted a preview of the Michelob ULTRA Pitchside Club, where comedian Kevin Hart led the opening-night festivities. Guests were entertained by performances from Ludacris, DJ Pee Wee and Disco Lines.The World Cup celebrations are set to continue throughout the weekend, with major brands organising fan events, watch parties and cultural showcases across several host cities.
On Friday, Coca-Cola and Spotify are scheduled to host a United States-Paraguay watch party featuring performances by De La Rose and Gonzy, alongside activities celebrating Hispanic culture and cuisine.Additionally, Sports Illustrated’s “SI Beyond the Pitch” series will bring together football, music and entertainment across various World Cup venues. The programme begins in Los Angeles with a headline performance by Nelly before moving on to Dallas and Miami later in the tournament.
The opening ceremony highlighted the World Cup’s global appeal, blending football and entertainment as millions of fans around the world turned their attention to the start of the month-long competition.
