Former world champion boxer Zolani Tete has been shot and killed in South Africa, government officials have confirmed.
Tete, 38, was reportedly attacked in his car at his residence in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, on Friday.
South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, confirmed the boxer’s death, saying a 27-year-old woman who was in the vehicle with Tete was also shot multiple times and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
According to police, Tete was arriving at his residence and waiting for the gate to open when two armed suspects wearing balaclavas ambushed him.
The former champion enjoyed a successful professional boxing career, winning the World Boxing Federation (WBF) flyweight title between 2007 and 2008.
He later captured the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) bantamweight title in 2017 and held the belt again in 2019.
Police authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are searching for the suspects responsible for the attack.
