HRW Raises Alarm Over Rising Arrests, LGBTQ+ Crackdown in Senegal

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has warned that an intensifying crackdown on LGBTQ+ people in Senegal is fueling stigma, forcing individuals into hiding and discouraging access to HIV testing and treatment.

In a report released on Monday, the international rights organisation said the measures were threatening fundamental human rights and undermining public health efforts.

Rights groups estimate that at least 212 people were arrested between February and July, while another organisation puts the figure at more than 300. The figures have not been officially confirmed.

The crackdown follows the passage of a new law by Senegal’s parliament earlier this year, which doubles prison sentences for homosexuality to between five and 10 years.

The legislation also criminalises the promotion or financing of homosexuality, expanding legal restrictions on activities associated with LGBTQ+ people.

Human Rights Watch warned that the measures could deepen discrimination and discourage members of the LGBTQ+ community from seeking essential healthcare services, including HIV testing and treatment.

Homosexuality has been criminalised in Senegal since 1965, but rights groups say hostility towards LGBTQ+ people has intensified in recent years.

Senegal is among more than 30 African countries that criminalise same-sex sexual activity.
