Hundreds Gather in Oslo to Support Ailing King Harald V

Hundreds of Norwegians have gathered outside the Royal Palace in Oslo to show their support for King Harald V, whose health has deteriorated while undergoing treatment at Oslo University Hospital.

The 89-year-old monarch, Europe’s oldest reigning king, has been hospitalised since August 17 after being diagnosed with haemolytic anaemia. His condition was later complicated by a bacterial bloodstream infection and has now been described as “extremely serious”.

The worsening health of the King prompted Queen Sonja and Crown Prince Haakon, who is currently serving as regent, to cancel their official engagements and rush to his bedside. Other members of the royal family have also gathered at the hospital.

News of the King’s deteriorating condition triggered an emotional response across Norway, with hundreds of people converging on the Royal Palace in Oslo.

Supporters laid flowers, lit candles and left handwritten messages, drawings and notes wishing the monarch a recovery. Similar displays of solidarity were reported in other Norwegian cities as citizens awaited further updates from the palace.

The King’s condition also led senior government officials to alter their schedules.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre cancelled a planned visit to Germany, saying he wanted to remain in Norway and stand with the country in expressing his thoughts for the King and the royal family.

Parliament Speaker Masud Gharahkhani also cut short an overseas visit and returned to Norway.

Harald became King of Norway in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. During his reign, he has experienced several health challenges, including surgery to implant a permanent pacemaker.

Although the monarch has reduced his official duties in recent years because of his health, he has repeatedly rejected suggestions that he could abdicate.

Harald has said the oath he took before Norway’s parliament represents a lifelong commitment to serving as King, underscoring his determination to remain on the throne despite his health difficulties.
