Thousands of students, most of them Indian nationals, are in limbo over their Indian students Canada work permit status after completing a business management diploma programme offered through Portage College and the Canadian Institute of Osteopathic Therapy in Calgary.
The graduates say they are not receiving the post-graduation work permit they expected after paying roughly $32,000 in tuition fees over two years.Why Graduates Say They Were Left Ineligible The graduates claim Canadian immigration authorities changed a rule that made non-credit programmes ineligible for the post-graduation work permit.
They say they applied for the permit before this rule change took effect, and argue they should not be penalised for a change introduced after their applications.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), however, has said no rule change occurred. Adding to the confusion, some students from the same institution have reportedly received their work permits, while others have not.
“My Father Spent His Whole Lifetime Saving for Me”Jaspinder Kaur, one of the affected students, described the financial and emotional toll of the situation to CTV News.
“My father spent his whole lifetime saving for me,” she said. “After completing my two years of study, I thought I would be able to work and gain some Canadian experience.”
