The Jigawa State Government has begun the distribution of Mama Kits to pregnant and lactating mothers as part of efforts to improve access to antenatal care, safe delivery services, and routine child healthcare across the state.
The initiative is aimed at encouraging more women to deliver in healthcare facilities while strengthening maternal and child health outcomes, particularly in rural communities.
Improving Access to Maternal Care
According to health officials, the programme is designed to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths by removing some of the barriers that discourage women from seeking care at primary health facilities.
The intervention forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to strengthen primary healthcare delivery under Governor Umar Namadi.
Distribution Across Local Facilities
In Kaugama Local Government Area, Mama Kits have been distributed to 11 primary healthcare facilities serving surrounding communities.
The Primary Health Care Manager of Kaugama, Abdullahi Aliyu Karkarna, said each kit contains essential items needed for childbirth and postnatal care.
The materials include rubber bowls, towels, soap, body lotion, diapers, sanitary pads, creams, and female wrappers. He added that each apex facility also received additional supplies to support expectant mothers.
Encouraging Facility-Based Deliveries
Health officials said the initiative is expected to encourage more women to attend antenatal clinics, deliver in healthcare facilities, and ensure newborns receive timely immunisation and postnatal care.
As part of broader maternal and child health interventions, the National Programme on Immunization office in the area has also begun distributing Vitamin A supplements, iron folate tablets, albendazole for deworming, and nutritional screening services for children.
Children between six and fifty-nine months are also receiving Azithromycin suspension to help prevent and treat bacterial infections.
Community and Government Response
Local government officials commended the state government for the intervention, describing it as a positive step toward improving grassroots healthcare delivery.
The Vice Chairman of Kaugama Local Government, Umar Magaji, who represented the council chairman, praised the initiative and pledged to present the kits for further consideration and possible support at the local government level.
Focus on Reducing Mortality Rates
Health experts continue to emphasize that improving access to antenatal care and encouraging hospital-based deliveries are key strategies for reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.
The Mama Kits programme is expected to boost confidence in primary healthcare facilities and improve health outcomes for women and children across Jigawa State.
