Hundreds of Kenyans living in Australia have taken to the streets of Sydney demanding answers over the mysterious death of 25 year old Kenyan student Sheila Jepkorir Chebii, whose sudden death has left her family, friends and the wider diaspora community searching for the truth.
The demonstrations, held under the banner “Justice for Sheila Chebii”, drew Kenyans from across Australia who marched through central Sydney carrying Kenyan flags, placards and flowers in her memory.
Community leaders said the protests were not only about honouring Sheila’s life but also about ensuring a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Sheila, who hailed from Eldoret in Kenya’s Uasin Gishu region, had arrived in Australia in April 2026, barely one month before her death. She had travelled to Sydney to pursue further studies after completing her accounting degree in Kenya.
Alongside her studies, she was working part time in the hospitality sector to support herself. It was reported that she plunged to her death in mysterious circumstances after falling from the 19th floor of a hotel where she worked as a housekeeper.
Her death was confirmed to her family on May 17, sending shockwaves through both Kenya and the Kenyan diaspora community in Australia. What has made the case particularly troubling is the lack of clear information about what happened during her final hours.
According to reports cited by her family, Sheila may have fallen from a high floor of the building where she worked. Relatives claim she was last seen entering a hallway on the nineteenth floor, but CCTV footage reportedly failed to capture what happened next.

They have also questioned inconsistencies surrounding the timeline of events, alleging that phone activity linked to Sheila appeared to continue around the time authorities indicated she had died. Australian authorities have not confirmed those claims and investigations remain ongoing.
The uncertainty surrounding the circumstances of her death has fuelled growing concern among Kenyans both in Australia and back home. Many believe key questions remain unanswered, including exactly where and how she died, why there are reported gaps in surveillance footage, and whether all available evidence has been fully examined.
Kenya’s High Commission in Australia has sought clarification from Australian authorities and urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue. The mission has stressed that official findings will be crucial in determining the true circumstances of Sheila’s death.
For now, Sheila’s family remains in mourning while the Kenyan community continues to press for answers. Across Sydney, many protesters say they will not stop demanding justice until every question surrounding the young student’s death is addressed.
