Millions of euros’ worth of jewellery has been stolen from the museum of French luxury glassmaker Lalique following a daring burglary in northeastern France.
According to investigators, a group of masked burglars broke into the museum in Wingen-sur-Moder at about 5:30 a.m. on Sunday. The suspects reportedly forced their way through an entrance before heading directly to the jewellery gallery, where they smashed six display cases.
Authorities said approximately 20 pieces of jewellery were stolen during the raid. The value of the stolen items is still being assessed but is estimated at several million euros, with losses believed to be close to €4 million.
French investigators have launched an inquiry into the burglary as they work to identify the suspects and recover the stolen valuables.
The incident comes only months after another high-profile jewellery theft at Paris’ Louvre Museum, raising renewed concerns over security at museums housing valuable collections.
