An explosion struck near a hotel in Damascus where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during his visit to Syria, highlighting the country’s fragile security situation.
The blast occurred as Macron became the first head of state from a European Union member country to visit Syria since rebels led by Ahmed al-Sharaa overthrew former president Bashar al-Assad in 2024.
The incident underscored the significant security challenges facing Syria despite the change in leadership. Authorities have not immediately confirmed the cause of the explosion, the extent of any casualties, or whether Macron or members of his delegation were in any danger.
Security forces quickly secured the area as investigations into the blast began. Macron’s visit is aimed at strengthening diplomatic engagement with Syria’s new leadership and discussing regional stability, reconstruction efforts, and humanitarian concerns.
The explosion comes amid continued instability across parts of Syria, where sporadic attacks and security incidents remain a persistent threat despite the end of the Assad government’s rule.
