Nigeria Condemns Houthi Attack on Saudi Airport, Calls for Restraint

The Federal Government has condemned the reported attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, allegedly carried out by Houthi militia, describing the incident as a dangerous escalation that threatens regional peace and security.

The attack, which occurred on Saturday, reportedly claimed at least 12 civilian lives and left more than 300 people injured.

Nigeria, in a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, said the incident disregarded civilian safety, violated Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and undermined ongoing efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.

The government called on all parties involved to respect international law, exercise restraint and refrain from actions that could worsen tensions or endanger civilian lives.

“Nigeria reiterates its call on all parties to respect international law, exercise utmost restraint, and refrain from any further action that could escalate tensions, endanger civilian lives, damage civilian infrastructure or further undermine regional peace and security,” Adeniyi stated.

The Federal Government expressed solidarity with the Saudi Arabian government and its people, extending condolences to the families of those killed and wishing the injured a speedy and full recovery.

It also stressed the importance of respecting Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, alongside adherence to international obligations to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.

“Nigeria underscores the imperative of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as upholding international law, particularly the obligations to protect civilian lives and safeguard critical infrastructure,” the statement said.

The government commended Saudi authorities for their emergency response to the incident and acknowledged their continued efforts to protect the country’s security and the welfare of its citizens.

Nigeria further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting diplomatic initiatives and constructive dialogue aimed at promoting international peace, security and stability.

It said the country remained supportive of genuine efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, protect civilian lives and safeguard critical infrastructure.

The government urged all parties to prioritise peaceful engagement and avoid further actions that could destabilise the region.
