The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapping kingpin and recovered two AK-47 rifles during an intelligence-led operation in Baruten Local Government Area of the state.
The command disclosed that the operation was carried out by officers of its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of ongoing efforts to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes across Kwara State.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, operatives attached to the Okuta Divisional Headquarters apprehended a group of suspected criminals during a routine raid in the Tabida area of Okuta on June 1.
Following preliminary investigations, the suspects were transferred to the VCRU for further profiling and interrogation.
Police investigations reportedly identified one Umar Abubakar, popularly known as “Manti,” as the alleged leader of a kidnapping syndicate linked to several abduction cases and other violent crimes in parts of Kwara North.
The police said the group is believed to have operated across several communities, including Okuta, Ilesha-Baruba, Tabida, Taberu, and surrounding areas.
Further intelligence gathering led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles loaded with magazines, which investigators believe were used by the gang during its criminal operations.
The command described the seizure as a significant breakthrough in its efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve security within the affected communities.
Police authorities added that the suspects remain in custody and are assisting investigators with information that may lead to the arrest of other members of the syndicate.
Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the group’s activities and ensure all those involved are brought to justice.
The Commissioner of Police commended officers of the Violent Crime Response Unit and supporting formations for their professionalism and commitment to the operation.
The command also reassured residents that intelligence-driven security operations have been intensified across strategic locations in the state to protect lives and property.
According to the police, the suspects will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
