Russia Releases Former US Marine in Poor Health

Russia has released Robert Gilman, a former US Marine whose health had reportedly deteriorated severely during his imprisonment, following discussions between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump announced the release, saying it was granted on a humanitarian basis and that there was no prisoner exchange involved.

Gilman, 32, was arrested in Russia in 2022 after allegedly kicking a police officer while travelling on a train. He was initially sentenced to three and a half years in prison, but his sentence was later increased to 10 years after he was convicted of assaulting prison guards.

His health reportedly deteriorated significantly while in Russian custody. He was recently transferred from prison to a civilian hospital after entering a catatonic-like state. His family described his condition as life-threatening and alleged that he had experienced harsh treatment while imprisoned.

According to an advocate who worked on his case, Gilman was diagnosed with dissociative stupor, leaving him largely unresponsive and unable to eat or interact normally. The advocate also alleged that he had been subjected to prolonged forced exercise sessions and psychotropic medication.

Gilman is now travelling back to the United States accompanied by his mother, doctors and US government officials. His family said he is expected to receive further assessment and treatment at a US military hospital in Texas.

His sister, Lexi Hudson, expressed gratitude to Trump and Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey, who also reportedly helped secure his release.

Gilman served in the US Marines from August 2019 to August 2020.

The release comes amid ongoing US-Russia tensions, with advocates saying several other Americans remain detained in Russia and are also dealing with medical problems.
