Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has announced a record aircraft order worth approximately €8.75 billion, committing to purchase up to 40 Airbus A330-family jets as part of its long-term fleet renewal and expansion strategy.
The order includes a mix of the fuel-efficient Airbus A330-900 aircraft and A330-300 jets, with deliveries expected to begin in the early 2030s. Although the deal is valued at more than $10 billion (€8.75 billion) at list prices, airlines typically receive significant discounts on large orders.
The investment marks a major milestone in SAS’s recovery after emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2024. The restructuring reduced billions in debt, brought in new owners led by Air France-KLM, and saw the airline leave the Star Alliance to join the SkyTeam alliance.
SAS returned to operating profit in 2025 following the overhaul. The Airbus purchase follows the airline’s order for 55 Embraer regional jets last year, forming the backbone of its long-term modernization strategy.
SAS said Airbus was selected over Boeing because the new aircraft are compatible with its existing Airbus fleet, allowing the airline to reduce training, maintenance and operational costs. The fleet commonality is expected to improve efficiency while supporting future growth.
The agreement is another major commercial success for Airbus as airlines continue replacing older, less fuel-efficient aircraft with newer models.
