Senegal’s ruling Pastef party is mounting pressure on the government to adhere to the electoral timetable ahead of local elections expected in January 2027.
The party has called on authorities to respect the legal deadline for the polls, arguing that the elections must be held no later than January 17, 2027.
However, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has yet to issue a decree officially setting the date for the elections, raising concerns within the ruling party over preparations for the vote.
Pastef has also questioned the delay in determining the electoral deposit, which it says should have been fixed several months ago as part of the preparations for the elections.
The party has warned the Interior Ministry and other electoral authorities that compliance with the electoral calendar is a legal obligation and should not be subject to political considerations.
The dispute comes amid growing political tensions within Senegal’s ruling camp, particularly between President Faye and Ousmane Sonko, the former prime minister and leader of Pastef.
The widening differences between the two leaders have exposed divisions within the ruling party and added uncertainty to the political landscape ahead of the 2027 local elections.
With the election deadline approaching, pressure is mounting on the government to take the necessary legal and administrative steps to ensure the polls are organised within the stipulated timeframe.
