Vatican Publishes First Images of Pope Leo XIV After Lung Surgery

The Vatican on Friday released the first images of Pope Leo XIV since he underwent lung surgery following a diagnosis of lung cancer earlier this week.

The 71-year-old pontiff was pictured celebrating Mass at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, accompanied by his personal secretary.

Doctors treating the Pope said he was making steady progress and remained capable of working and carrying out his normal daily activities independently.

Leo was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. The condition required the surgical removal of the lower lobe of his right lung.

The development has raised concerns within the Catholic Church, with some cardinals publicly expressing worries about the Pope’s health and his ability to sustain the demands of his office.

Despite the diagnosis, the Vatican has indicated that Leo intends to maintain his schedule of official engagements as his recovery continues.

According to the Vatican, the Pope is expected to lead the traditional midday prayer on Sunday, while preparations for his planned visit to South America in November are continuing.

However, the Vatican has not announced when he is expected to leave the hospital. Doctors had previously indicated that his recovery would take approximately one week.

Leo, who is regarded as relatively young and energetic for a pontiff, was elected in May last year. His cancer diagnosis has therefore come as a shock to many within the Catholic Church, raising questions about his health and the future demands of his papacy.
