United States forward Folarin Balogun has found himself in the spotlight after receiving a red card during his country’s FIFA World Cup Round of 32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a decision that will see him miss the next match through suspension.
Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review determined that he had stepped on the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemović. Although the United States secured a 2-0 victory to advance to the Round of 16, the suspension is expected to be a significant setback for the team.
The 25-year-old striker is one of the few international footballers eligible to represent three different countries. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Nigerian parents, Balogun also holds British citizenship after growing up in London, making him eligible to play for the United States, Nigeria and England.
Despite representing England at various youth levels, Balogun switched his international allegiance to the United States in 2023 after receiving approval from FIFA. He has since become a key figure in the US Men’s National Team.
Balogun began his football career in the youth academy of Arsenal before progressing into professional football. He later gained valuable experience through loan spells before establishing himself as one of the team’s leading attacking options on the international stage.
His suspension means the United States will be without one of its most influential forwards as the team prepares for its Round of 16 clash at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
