At least 11 people have been killed and three others wounded after three gunmen opened fire at a house party in KwaMakhutha township, south of Durban, South African police said Wednesday.
The shooting occurred late Tuesday night in the township, about 30 kilometres south of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal province.
Police said the victims were attending a gathering at the house when the three suspects entered and opened fire.
Ten people, including a woman believed to have been pregnant, died at the scene, while an 11th victim was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
The condition of the three wounded victims was not immediately known.
Police said no arrests had been made and that officers were searching for the three attackers. The motive for the shooting was also unclear.
Authorities said some of the people at the gathering were known to police in connection with ongoing investigations into criminal activity, but declined to provide further details.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli said the provincial government would continue working to address violence in the region.
“We will not stop as the government of KwaZulu-Natal to seek solutions,” Ntuli told reporters, adding that officials had met a day earlier to discuss the killing of women in the province.
Police and forensic investigators cordoned off the neighbourhood as they examined the scene. The bodies of some of the victims were covered with white sheets outside the house.
Police were also investigating whether the burning of a vehicle near the house was connected to the shooting.
The incident is the latest in a series of mass shootings in South Africa, where gun violence remains a major security concern.
In June, multiple gunmen killed 12 people in a shooting in a poor neighbourhood in Johannesburg. Two separate mass shootings in December also left 21 people dead.
