A former Crystal Palace youth player, Jordan Burton, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Daniel Allright, who died 16 years after suffering a serious head injury during an attack in London.
Burton, 34, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, September 30, after being convicted of murder following a trial.
He was 14 when he attacked Allright, then 16, during a group assault in Lewisham, southeast London, in September 2006.
According to the Metropolitan Police, Allright was attacked by a group of youths while he was with two friends. Burton hit him several times with a piece of wood, while other attackers used a bicycle chain and other objects.
Allright was rushed to hospital and underwent brain surgery.
The injuries left him with serious and lasting health problems, including post traumatic epilepsy and frequent seizures.
His condition deteriorated over the years. He eventually died at his home on March 26, 2022, aged 31, after suffering a fatal epileptic seizure.
A post mortem examination concluded that post traumatic epilepsy caused his death. Investigators subsequently reopened the case and began building a murder prosecution against Burton.
Burton had initially denied involvement in the 2006 attack but later pleaded guilty to violent disorder and causing grievous bodily harm. He received a two year youth rehabilitation order.
Following Allright’s death, Burton was arrested again in June 2024. He was charged with murder in October 2025 and pleaded not guilty.
During the murder trial, he denied responsibility and claimed he had been pressured into admitting the earlier assault.
The jury rejected his defence and found him guilty of murder.
The court heard that Burton had been identified by Crystal Palace as a potential football talent at the age of seven. He remained with the club until he was released at 13 because of an injury.
His lawyer told the court that leaving the football environment meant Burton suddenly had more time on his hands.
The judge, Anthony Leonard KC, said Burton played a leading role in the attack and had struck Allright with the wooden object more than once.
He sentenced Burton to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 10 years.
Allright’s mother, Geraldine Henderson, described her son as having a heart of gold and said he remained positive despite suffering thousands of seizures over the years.
She said she watched her son struggle for 16 years and added that she would never get over his death.
His sister, Victoria Henderson, said the family watched him fight to survive for years before his life eventually became a struggle.
Detective Sergeant Chris Taylor of the Metropolitan Police said the attack had a devastating impact on Allright and his family for 16 years.
Police said the case was particularly challenging because of the long period between the original attack and Allright’s death, with some witnesses no longer available.
Investigators, however, continued working on the case until Burton was brought before the court and convicted.
