Former Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir has been hospitalised at an army medical facility in Khartoum after suffering health complications, his lawyer said on Thursday.
Bashir, 82, has spent much of the period since his ouster in 2019 alternating between prison and hospital care.
The former president was removed from power following months of mass protests against his rule. He was subsequently tried on several charges and convicted of corruption and illicit financing, for which he was serving a prison sentence when war broke out in Sudan in 2023.
His family said his health condition had deteriorated and renewed calls for him to be transferred abroad for medical treatment.
The family also appealed to Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council, to approve Bashir’s release and allow him to travel abroad on humanitarian grounds.
Bashir has remained a prominent and controversial figure in Sudan since his removal from power, with his health and legal status continuing to draw attention amid the country’s ongoing conflict.
