China Tests Satellite-Linked Tracking Device to Protect China-Europe Rail Cargo

China is testing a new satellite-linked tracking device designed to improve security and prevent cargo theft along the China-Europe Railway Express, one of the world’s most important overland trade routes.

Developed by a team from several state-owned railway enterprises, the device uses China’s BeiDou-3 Navigation Satellite System to provide real-time tracking and monitoring of railway containers throughout their journey.

According to the developers, the technology addresses long-standing challenges in monitoring cargo in transit by enabling continuous location tracking and status updates. The system is expected to strengthen cargo security, improve operational efficiency, and enhance safety across the transcontinental rail network.

The mountable device collects real-time positioning data, allowing railway operators to monitor containers in all weather conditions and respond quickly to potential security threats or logistical issues.

Researchers said the system leverages the autonomous capabilities of the BeiDou-3 satellite network to deliver accurate, uninterrupted tracking without relying on foreign navigation systems.

The innovation could play a key role in protecting valuable shipments moving between China and Europe while supporting the continued expansion of the China-Europe Railway Express as a major international trade corridor.
