Court fines 20-year-old for driving his dad’s car without insurance in UK

A 20-year-old driver, Tamuka Nyamweda, has been fined hundreds of pounds after taking his father’s car onto the road without insurance.

Nyamweda was stopped by police while driving his dad’s Nissan on the A249 in Maidstone on November 2 last year. Officers pulled him over near the Junction 7 roundabout of the M20 as he joined the slip road.

In court, prosecutors said Nyamweda admitted straight away that the car belonged to his father. When asked about insurance, he confirmed he was not covered and said only his dad was insured.

Nyamweda, who lives with his parents in Rochester, later pleaded guilty at Medway Magistrates Court.

He told the court he was aware he did not have insurance. He explained he usually buys short term cover but had failed to renew it.

Despite holding a full clean licence which he exchanged after passing his test in Zimbabwe, magistrates handed him six penalty points.

He was fined £384 and ordered to pay an additional £154 victim surcharge plus £85 in court costs. He will repay the total at £100 per month.

The case serves as a blunt reminder that even a quick drive in a borrowed car can come at a high price without proper cover.
